Loxahatchee River Environmental Control District

For nearly three decades, we've been guided by the mission to preserve and protect the Loxahatchee River, Florida's only Wild & Scenic river, through environmental management, river research, pollution control and environmental education.

The diverse natural ecosystems and hydrology found within the river's watershed are truly a unique treasure, beginning with the Atlantic which feeds its marine waters inshore through the Inlet at Jupiter to sustain a thriving ecosystem of aquatic life. Just inshore, the river broadens into the aquatic preserves of Indian River Lagoon, an estuary where saline waters blend with freshwaters to create a rich and productive habitat. As you continue westerly, the Wild & Scenic freshwater reaches meet the vast wetlands and Loxahatchee Slough.

To preserve this precious asset and address the challenges of a growing community, we've developed a regional wastewater management program, created innovative water reuse programs such as I.Q. Water, and lead the way to regional stormwater management. Furthering river research efforts is also an important component, which enables us to better understand this great river system with programs like RiverKeeper and an ecological laboratory for water quality studies.

Our public education and environmental education programs allow us to share this information with you and provide opportunities through educational facilities such as the Marine Science Center and Busch Wildlife Sanctuary at Otter Creek, and activities through organizations such as Friends of the Loxahatchee River.
